AUGUST 2020 NEWSLETTER

August is always a fairly quiet month on the nursery. Many customers have already done most of their Spring/Summer planting and it's the month of summer holidays when people are setting off with the caravan or jetting off to somewhere sunny. So, if you're looking for a quiet shopping experience, now's the time to visit the nursery, especially during the week! We usually take this month to catch up on paper work, have a good clear out and prepare for the rootball/autumn season ahead.

AUGUST GARDENING TIP

August is all about watering! Keep an eye on all your plants, whether newly planted this season or well-established.

Water plants in containers, daily.

Water plants in the ground every 3-4 days, and watch out for signs of drought stress, such as dull or drooping leaves. This will be the first sign that your plant is not getting enough water.

Newly planted plants should be saturated, watering the soil directly around the plant. Consider mulching to help retain moisture.

Don't fret about your lawn if dry weather persists, it will recover when the wetter weather reappears.

Watch out for mildews and leaf spots on susceptible plants - it will establish quickly if August is damp. Inspect as regularly as possible, picking off affected leaves and spray if necessary.

DEVELOPMENTS ON THE NURSERY

OUR NEW SHADE HOUSE IS OPEN

Sited at the end of the Perennials, our new shade house is now in use and open to visitors. It's still work in progress, so bear with us as we continue to add and move plants in to this area. It'll soon be home to all our shade loving plants, including Ferns, Tree Ferns, Hostas, Azaleas, Rhododendrons, Camellias and Japanese Maples, to name a few!

NEW CUSTOMER TOILET COMING SOON

To save that long walk down to the current toilet (by the house), we're renovating the summerhouse next to the greenhouse exit to become our new customer toilet with disabled access and baby change facility. Work has already begun with repairs to the roof, and the walls have been painted with Thorndown 'Dormouse Grey' Wood Paint. The plumbing should be completed by the end of August... so, keep your legs crossed until then!

SHEFFIELD BIKE STANDS NOW INSTALLED

We've always welcomed cyclists on to the nursery, especially since CUPPA Coffee Shop opened in May 2019. But, there's always been a lack of bike stands... or 'proper' bike stands, as we've been told! We've listened to your feedback and we've now installed five Sheffield Bike Stands, which are located BEHIND the compost, and available for your use.

CUPPA COFFEE SHOP

OPENING HOURS:

Thursday & Friday, 11am to 3pm

Saturday & Sunday, 10am to 3pm

It's been lovely to see so many familiar faces returning to CUPPA for a brew, and we've been overwhelmed with the number of new customers we've acquired since opening after lockdown. A big thank you to all of you for supporting the business since re-opening.

The CUPPA Coffee Shop garden is really taking shape with a lot of the Spring planting now in bloom. The other half of the pond has been tidied and cleaned and we're creating a small graveled seating area at the back of the pond. It's a lovely, relaxing setting for a cup of coffee and piece of cake!

We now have outdoor seating for up to 30 people, with appropriate social distancing.

DREW'S POP UP PIZZA EVENT - SATURDAY 15TH AUGUST, 12-3PM

Enjoy a freshly prepared wood fired pizza in the CUPPA Coffee Shop garden! Drew not only bakes them to order, but he makes the dough by hand himself - no premixes or frozen dough balls in Drew's kitchen!
