Established in 1988, Middlecombe is an independent, family-run plant nursery and coffee shop in Congresbury. Husband and wife duo Nigel and Isy North set up the nursery at the back of their family home, which is now managed by their daughters Becci and Leigh, and covers three acres of land, set against the local woodland. It offers more than 3,000 varieties of plants, from shrubs, perennials, climbers, grasses, conifers, trees, exotic palms, bamboos, and houseplants. Situated a short distance from the A370 between Bristol and Weston-super-Mare, in North Somerset, the nursery is in a slightly hidden, peaceful, countryside setting, with a small car park, bike stands, and a bus stop at the end of the road.
The perfect spot for a cuppa
In 2019, Middlecombe redesigned and rebuilt its garden space to expand its services and enhance the overall customer experience. The launch of CUPPA, a coffee shop built inside a 1960s greenhouse with outdoor seating in the garden, enables customers to enjoy the natural setting over a cup of coffee and some locally-sourced and homemade treats. There’s nothing quite like popping in on a spring or summers day for a relaxing afternoon surrounded by beautiful blooms and happy bees bumbling.
Unique garden treasures
Along with regular gardening supplies, you’ll also find a quirky mix of gardenalia – one-of-a-kind, salvaged, and agricultural items that can be used as centrepieces or points of interest within an outdoor space. Be sure to drop in regularly to see what’s available, as stock changes on a weekly basis. Ideal for those planning a rustic or cottage garden, unique finds include romantic ornaments ideal for styling in a bed of vivacious blooms, antique garden gates, and an array of pots, watering cans, and barrels that would be perfect for a fun upcycling project.
A horticultural haven
Meanwhile, the greenhouse is also home to the full range of gardening supplies, from the Fertiliser Shed, filled with food to give your plants the growth spurt or nourishment they require, to the Paint Pot, where you’ll find all kinds of colours to update your fences, shed and decking. It’s more important than ever for those with an outdoor space to encourage wildlife and pollinating insects, which is why the nursery even has a special section for items that do just that, such as bee hotels and bird seed. Finally, the Gift Box is the perfect spot to find a range of beautiful products for the home and garden, suitable for gifting across a range of occasions.
The judges commended the nursery for having adapted and evolved over the years to suit the ever-changing needs of the customer. The family run team places an emphasis on ensuring an excellent all-round visitor experience. Friendly, and informative advice is always offered to customers who need it, and a local delivery service within the North Somerset and Bristol areas is available for large items or quantities.
